Job Description

You will contribute to the engineering operational support to the EUMETSAT Data Centre, ensuring the complete archiving and long-term preservation of data and products from EUMETSAT’s satellites. The Data Centre Archive (UMARF) holds over 30 years of Meteosat data as well as data from Metop, Jason, Sentinel-3 and NOAA satellites.

In addition, you will contribute to the engineering operational support of the Data Store, Data Tailor, Data Lake and EUMETView.

For this position, you will have to support the following tasks:

  • Provision of first line support to all Data Centre supported services
    • Handling of expected and unexpected events, raising the appropriate anomaly reports and/or JIRA tickets
    • Investigate anomalies to provide information to second line support to support their resolution
    • Contribute to resolving user enquiries
    • Update of services documentation, including maintenance of knowledge base
  • Execution of routine operational tasks
    • Daily monitoring of Data Centre operations services, ensuring nominal status
    • Conduct operational tasks as specified in the operations procedures
  • Contribute to the configuration of tools used for Data Centre operations
  • Conduct the integration, verification and validation testing of the service releases
  • Preparation of Services’ Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Development of Data Centre utilities (usually scripts in shell, Perl or Python) for operations
  • Provision of technical support to the evolution of the Data Centre services, including new user requirements, proof of concepts or prototypes, new user formats and their metadata
  • Contribute to the user preparation for service evolutions

Required qualifications and experience

  • Fluency in English
  • A university degree (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering / science discipline
  • UNIX / Linux OS
  • Software development in C/C++ and Java
  • Relational Databases and SQL
  • Shell, Perl or Python
  • MS Office, at least MS Word and MS Outlook
  • Excellent team working skills as well as being able to work autonomously
  • Very good analytical skills
  • Very good communication and behavioral skills
  • Ability to perform under high workload

Desirable qualifications and experience

  • Applying the software development lifecycle for systems development
    • Specification and validation of system and user requirements
    • Writing test plans and related documentation for verifying and validation computing systems
    • Testing and using test automation software like QF-Test or Selenium
    • Preparation and review support of development and user documentation
  • Source code control systems such as Gitlab
  • Continuous Integration and Delivery such as Gitlab CI/CD and Jerkins
  • REST APIs
  • Software Development IDEs such as Eclipse
  • XML/XSD/XLT and their associated tools
  • Experience in working in an operations environment supporting the analysis and resolution of system anomalies, and user support issues
  • Earth Observation (EO) data and their formats, such as netCDF, HDF, McIDAS, Geo-Tiff, BUGR and GRIB
  • Documentation Management Systems
  • Standards, conventions and guidelines for the specification of metadata for EO data, like the Climate and Forecast Conventions
  • EO data processing and visualization
  • Experience using tools like IDV, McIDAS-V, IDL and THREDDS
  • Cloud technologies like Dask, Docker Swarm, Docker containers, Kubernetes
  • OGC Standards ang GIS
  • Basic understanding of statistics generation and the use of analytical tools

 

Work Location

Darmstadt, Germany

We follow a hybrid scheme, which means you are expected to work two days per week in the office in Darmstadt (or more if you like), and on the remaining days you can work from home.
