openEO - A Common, Open Source Interface between Earth Observation Data Infrastructures and Front-End Applications is a project that has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. Solenix is very proud to be one of the ten European consortium partners under the coordination of the Technical University of Vienna, together with the University of Münster, the University of Wageningen, VITO, Mundialis, Sinergise, EURAC Research, the Joint Reserach Centre of the EC and EODC.
The aim of the project is to develop a simple interface (API) that connects popular data science clients to cloud-based backends in order to allow the processing of large volumes of Earth Observation data. To demonstrate the capability of the openEO interface, four use cases based on Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 time series will be implemented. openEO will simplify the use of cloud-based processing engines, allow switching between cloud-based back office providers and enable reproducible, open Earth observation science. Thereby, openEO reduces the entry barriers for the adaptation of cloud computing technologies by a broad user community and paves the way for the federation of infrastructure capabilities. openEO will be developed as an open source project. It will strongly rely on the input from the user community and it will seek direct dialogue between the developers and external partners.
Solenix's role in the project will be to develop a mobile application that will demonstrate the applicability of openEO as an enabler for a standardised approach to data processing, simplifying the access for both end users and application developers alike.
We are very excited to be part of this project and we are looking forward to meeting up with the user community during future workshops and hackathons, which will provide us with an excellent opportunity to engage with them and develop a useful and effective mobile app!
