Job Description

Are you a skilled software engineer eager to gain experience and knowledge in data centre operations and meteorological data management? As a Data Centre Operations Engineer at EUMETSAT, you'll be at the forefront of EUMETSAT's mission to provide reliable satellite data and products to the global user community.

Apply your skills and knowledge in software engineering to:

 

  • Support Routine Operations: Implement and maintain scripts and tools for monitoring data ingestion and access services, ensuring smooth and efficient daily operations.
  • Resolve Anomalies: Investigate and troubleshoot issues, providing first-line support and collaborating with second-line support to resolve complex anomalies.
  • Maintain Documentation: Update and manage service documentation, including operational procedures and knowledge base entries.
  • Develop Utilities: Create and enhance scripts and utilities (in shell, Perl, Python) to automate tasks and improve operational efficiency.
  • Testing and Validation: Conduct integration, verification, and validation testing of service releases to ensure reliability and performance.
  • Enhance Services: Contribute to the evolution of Data Centre services by supporting new user requirements, developing proofs of concept, and integrating new data formats and metadata standards.
  • User Support: Assist the user community by resolving enquiries and providing technical guidance on data access and services.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Fluency in English
  • University degree (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline
  • Proficiency in UNIX/Linux OS, C/C++, Java, Shell, Perl, Python, relational databases, and SQL
  • Excellent team working skills and ability to work autonomously
  • Strong analytical and communication skills
  • Ability to perform under high workload

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Applying the software development lifecycle for systems development: specifying and validating requirements, writing test plans, and using test automation tools like QF-Test or Selenium.
  • Proficiency in source code control systems (Gitlab), CI/CD tools (Gitlab CI/CD, Jenkins), and REST APIs.
  • Familiarity with software development IDEs (Eclipse), XML/XSD/XLT, and associated tools.
  • Knowledge of Earth Observation (EO) data formats (netCDF, HDF, Geo-Tiff) and metadata standards (Climate and Forecast Conventions).
  • Experience with documentation management systems, EO data processing and visualization tools (IDV, McIDAS-V, IDL, THREDDS),
  • Experience with cloud technologies (Dask, Docker Swarm, Docker containers, Kubernetes).
  • Understanding of OGC standards, GIS, and basic statistics generation and analytical tools.

Work Location: Darmstadt, Germany

We follow a hybrid scheme, which means you are expected to work two days per week in the office in Darmstadt (or more if you like), and on the remaining days you can work from home.
